How Howard Stern Could Start an Internet Empire by Jeff Jarvis

Yesterday’s Howard Stern show appearance came because on This Week in Google, we’d made fun of Howard Stern for using Lotus Notes still and Howard’s geek guru, Jeff Schick of IBM, rose up in protest and invited me in to see how the show uses it.

Start with Stern technology: Schick said they they digitize everything – every show, every bit of audio, every press clipping, even everything sent into the show. They scan all the fan mail. They scan dildoes. This adds up to 100 terabytes of data. That’s stored at Howard’s office in New York (outside Sirius) – which is in addition to the audio that’s stored, of course, at Sirius (and backed up in New Jersey), and in addition to the video archives. Howard’s own 100tb is backed up at Howard’s beach house. Howard’s office has a T1 and business-class cable and a direct link to Howard’s apartment, which also has business-class cable, like his beach house (which has CAT5 cable in every all and multiple wi-fi networks for Howard and guests). Serious shit.

I feel like after Artie Lange’s MEGA-SUCCESS with Too Fat To Fish, which was like a COMET, now every comic/cast affiliated with the Howard Stern show is getting their own book: Gary Dell’Abate, Lisa Lampanelli, Sarah Silvermann, Greg Fitzsimmons, etc. I am not saying these people aren’t deserved of book deals, I am just saying that they all seem like a direct result of Artie’s success.

Howard said he had a funny clip to play but he had Lisa G come in first. Lisa ran down her news preview. Lisa said they have a story about Gary signing a book deal with Random House to write his life story. Howard said he knew about that. He said he came to him for his blessing. He said his book is going to be called ”They Call Me Baba Booey.” Howard said Gary asked him if it was okay to write the book and he gave him his blessing. Howard described what it was like when he came to him. He said Gary is going to write about what it was like being raised by his mom and how his dad told him that there was something wrong with his mom and there was nothing wrong with him.

Howard said he thinks that his father should have done that for him. He said he heard Gary’s story about what his life was like with his mother. He said it’s amazing the way he turned out being raised like that. Howard said Gary’s dad told him about his mom early on and that must have helped him stay adjusted. Gary said one of the themes of the book is going to be about how he never knew if he was going to be kicked in the teeth or hugged. Howard said it’s always about teeth with Gary.

Gary said that his shrink talked to him about that and it’s like his mom prepared him very well for working on this show.

Howard asked Gary if his mom is okay with him writing this book. Gary said she is okay with it. He said that he spoke to some of his family about it as well. He said that he doesn’t hate his mom and he doesn’t blame her for her problems either. Gary said he’s not looking to make her look bad. Gary said he doesn’t think that what she went through is her fault. Gary said his mom doesn’t remember everything that he’s going to write about. She’s kind of nervous about it but he’s not going to trash her.

Howard said Sal was out in the hall dressed like Gary and he was writing his book. He was writing about Solitaire and shit breath among other things.

Lisa asked if he knows the cover yet. Gary said that it’s available for pre-order on Amazon.com already. Gary said he has 20,000 words written already and he’s got a due date already too. The book is due out November 3. Howard asked if they’re going to like the book. Gary said he’s writing it with a writer and it should be good. Howard asked if there will be an audio book. Gary said ”absolutely.” He said he’ll probably read it himself.

Howard congratulated Gary on the book and had Lisa G get back to the news preview. (recap by MarksFriggin)

Yawn… can we get a more interesting interviewer in there instead of the daily Sway Calloway softballs? MTV — (aside from the head of programming), is run by some numbnuts. Mainly referring to whoever runs MTVNews… if they had the sense God gave geese, they’d get rid of these bores and milquetoast fucking people like Sway and iJustine. Give me a break with this… I can make Drake 20,000 times more interesting. And I’ve decided I wouldn’t even need to prepare questions in advance. I like working without a rope. Fuck a babooshka.
