Cardboard City’s resident DJ, Chauncey took some time, post-touring with Cage/Chris Palko, to answer my questions. I don’t care where you know Chauncey from – Cage tours, XO Skeletons, CC, being Jay Mewes of Bob’s (San Fransisco), …JUST CHECK THIS, SEN!

SHABOOTY: Who that drives your tour van, is the most likely to get pulled over?
Chauncey: When Todd Westphal (Tour Manager / Photographer) is driving, it’s a lot easier to get pulled over because instead of looking for Johnny Law, he’s too busy looking for Hawk’s hanging out on wires or flying around. But, he did claim there was a hawk “protecting us” once at a boarder crossing. It was agriculture crossing, though. But, I suppose had we been smuggling fruit, that hawk would’ve protected us. Thanks for nothing, Hawk.

Have you seen Jersey Shore, yet?
Of Course!!! I love guidos!! They’re SO shitty, that they’re awesome! Me & [Daryl] Palumbo LOVE going to clubs like on the Jersey Shore & getting the fuck down to some guido house. Ed Hardy Party, Bro. Yo Snooki, Get at us! Me & DP wanna dance fuck you!

What do you think of DJ Steve Aoki?
I mean, I’ve seen him spin live & I guess despite being accused of rocking the “Pre-Mix” when he DJ’s, he’s decent. He’s kind of a joke as far as the DJing world goes ’cause he’s the ultimate trust fund kid, and from what I hear, a typical Hollywood cunt. So yeah, get him outta here….WOULD bang his sister, though! L@Lz!

What’s the background on your group XO Skeletons? How’d it originate?
XO Skeletons was my 1st band I did with my good friends / life partners F. Sean Martin (House of Blow, EX-Hatebreed) & Wesley Eisold (American Nightmare, Cold Cave). We basically just wanted to hang out & be in the best band ever together…Mission accomplished! Ha…so yeah, that’s pretty much how that came about.

How did you meet Cage?
I met Cage like 6 or 7 yrs ago through Palumbo. We met in a smoke filled dressing room somewhere on Long Island at a Head Automatica show… Maybe the Crazy Donkey or some shit. He had Camu & EL-P with him as well. We all hung out after the show til’ like 7 a.m. just smoking out & talking about music & shit….We’ve all basically been doing the same thing together since the night we met. FRIENDSHIP!! This was also the 1st night I ever smoked weed in front of Daryl’s parents. Haha. Scumbag!

You grew up in San Fransisco?
Nah, I grew up in Bristol, CT but I’ve lived in S.F. for the past 4 yrs or so & don’t really see myself moving any time soon. I love S.F. I can legally use cannabis here for my anxiety & such without being treated like a criminal…Plus, my neighbor is A.R. …AND I love rice-a-roni, So it’s a win/win.

Do you think Lil Wayne can kick that syrup habit?
Lil Wayne better kick that shit, before that shit kicks his lil’ ass right into a fuckin’ lil grave. Haha.

How was this last tour diff than the earlier one in 2009?
The last tour was different than the Less Than Jake tour in the sense that on the last tour that we headlined people did NOT hate us & wish we were dead like they do on the LTJ tour. Haha. I’m only playin’. Um, obviously a lot of kids on the LTJ tour DON’T enjoy us, but there’s a lot of kids coming up to us every night like, “We never heard of you guys but loved it” or the ever popular, “I don’t even like rap but you guys were awesome”, and I suppose if we made even 1 new fan a night it was worth it, right?

So Cage and Kid Cudi are working together, have you met Cudder, yet?
Yeah, I met CuDi like a year & a half ago at a party I was DJing in D.C. He’s a legit dude & I’m a fans of his, so I’m pretty psyched about the collabo between him & Cage. Should be very awesome.

What did you think of him punching a fan in Vancouver?
Um, probably not the best call seeing as it got him kicked off the Lady Gaga tour, but sometimes your emotions get the best of you & you end of putting train marks around some fans fuckin’ eye. Haha. GET EM’ CUDI!!!

When did you start DJing?
I’d been DJing Hip-Hop at house parties & parties on my block in Bristol since I was like 15 yrs old, but didn’t really start goin’ hard & semi pro & making loot til like 4 yrs ago. It’s a flooded assed market right now, tho. EVERYBODY wants to be a DJ…and rightfully so. It’s a nice life.

I know you’re Daryl’s boy, how did ya guys meet?
Daryl and I have known each other through punk & hardcore LITERALLY since we were children. That’s one of my main dudes right there. Cardboard City Prez.

When did your sparks obsession start?
Dude, the 1st time I ever drank it I was hooked. Me & Deefy coined the term: “Drunk PLUS Powerful!” to describe ourselves every time we drank it. Shit would get us amped up.

Don’t you feel like they ruined the drink when they took out the caffeine, and didn’t tell anybody?
Yeah, I fully agree. Although they’ve tried upping the alcohol content since taking out the caffeine, but it just doesn’t fill the void of that caffeine / “power”. They did make a new flavor though, that’s pretty bangin’. It’s like fruit punch or some shit & it’s like 9% alcohol. Comes with the red top. If you’re a fan of the SPARKS franchise, I’d suggest giving it a try.

I saw your face on the website of iChill… I thought you were the poster boy for Drank. What gives?
Really? I’ve tried iChill like once & it does the job, but fuck all that. Until they’re hooking me up with some free stuff, they need to take my picture down. I’m a DRANK dude. My boy Eric over at DRANK is the man & keeps me laced with that DRANK whenever I need it. DRANK is my shit. That stuff is delicious. Even outside of how rad & relaxed it makes you feel, it just tastes great. Hands down the BEST after AFTER party drink ever…& great for long after show van rides as well. AYO Eric, Send me a case, sen! Ha.

What DJs do you look up to in the game?
I look up to like Sinden, Tommie Sunshine…Uh, I really like DJ Medhi & Mega from Steed Lord…, DJ Assault.

You’re very opinionated, who’s corny to you in the music world?
Man, I REALLY hate Drake. 1st time I saw him rapping on TV, I was like “Is that the motherfucker in the wheelchair from Degrassi?” Then, when I realized it was him & he wasn’t actually in a wheelchair, I swore vengeance on him. Fuck that guy…AKA I’ll probably end up being friends with the dude in the next 5 months. L@Lz!

What was it like working with Shia LaBeouf [on Cage's "I Never Knew You" music video]?
It was cool. Like working with a friend, which he is. Shia’s a great dude. Total professional & NOT a typical Hollywood cunt. He’s done a lot for me & my squad. Dude let all of us post up in his LAVISH assed house in L.A. during the Cage video, and this was before he had even stayed there! Can’t say enough good things about that cat. One of CC’s finest.

What do you think of Samantha Ronson as a DJ?
Um, as a DJ she’s whatever, BUT she got a piece of [Lindsay] Lohan, so PEACE TA THAT! Haha.

Did you like DJAM’s work?
Adam was a very versatile & an avid music fan. That always makes for a great DJ. He will be missed. <3

What’s next for CC in 2010?
CC cats got gems in 2010, for sure. I’ma drop a new mixtape, that new Head Automatica joints dropping, Yak Ballz is finishing up “Gas Galaxy”, The Cage & Kid CuDi thing, Benn Grim’s “Novocain” EP is coming out, New A.R. joints, etc… So yeah, CC pretty much got it on lock for 2010.
