Felt 3 Murs & Slug – A Tribute To Rosie Perez – ALBUM REVIEW

Slug and MURS are back for part three. This time they have the inclusion of Aesop Rock production to help level the playing field. Sort of ironic, MURS isn’t with Warner Bros. anymore, however this is being distributed by….WARNER BROS./Rhymesayers. The “TI’s” always win. I guess that’s the lesson here? That and Rosie Perez has hit the wall and is no longer worth “jumping for”, even if you’re not a white man.

PROTAGONISTS
The album starts off with Protagonists, which I think was the first track posted online a few months ago…  it’s tight, but I probably listened to it one too many times on repeat.

FELT CHEWED UP
Listening to this makes me wonder why Jay-Z+Eminem were the DJ Hero promotional vehicle, when it should have been DJ Big Wiz. He shines on this almost more than Slug and MURS…

GET CAKE
I think this was used as a bed of music for one of AR’s youtube videos, and they threw it on the record as an interlude. That or it was an ode to Bob’s Donut’s in AR’s home of San Francisco.

PERMANENT STANDBY
This song stands out for me as one of my favs on the album. Partly cause it was cool to see sort of the making of it in one of the Rhmyesayers promotional videos, but mainly cause again, DJ Big Wizard KILLS IT!

LIKE YOU
Slug and MURS do lyrical four square. And not the iPhone app, though they’re both fighting for mayoral-ship.

BASS FOR YOUR TRUCK
I have yet to actually bump this in my car, so it’s hard to review it. So, at this point this is best left as: “Bass for my ALTEC Lansing desktop PC speakers.”

KEVIN SPACEY
Did Kevin Spacey once bang Rosie Perez or something? American Beauty and someone’s having a mid-life crisis? Shrug. Le Sigh.

GHOST DANCE DELUXE
We know Aesop Rock is a huge Nintendo nerd, so this sounds like something off the METROID PRIME soundtrack. Which is actually a good thing. Metroid Prime is an amazing game, with amazing environments (see: MURS’ hair), with amazing soundscapes (see: this song).

REVISITING THE STYLEETRON
This song’s pretty catchy – admittedly. Once I get that pick-up truck with bass, I can’t wait to play this song. I’d just have to replace the pitchforks with subwoofers. Natch!

WHALEFACE
I dunno what a whaleface is, but I know what a mask face is… see Cameron Diaz…a chick with a WIDE ASS FACE. I dunno, I am sort of disappointed, I listened to the whole song and I still dunno what a whaleface is. I am like Howard Stern, when it comes to comprehension of lyrics. He admits he barely even listens. Roffle.

GLORY BURNING
Is this song about a guy who’s dick is dripping lava and it burns when he pees? Probably not. Unfortunately. No homo, though.

SHE SONNET
This is classic AR production, and classic Slug lyrics. Which is good and bad depending on how you feel about the replayability of Atmosphere records. This is a song about the douche in you, calling others douchey.

HENRIETTA LONGBOTTOM
Is “longbottom” the new camel-toe? Or the new “meat curtains”? You get songs like these when your favorite rapper is spending too much time on UrbanDictionary.com. Roffle.

FELT GOOD
This is MURS’ version of “Ether” aka “When push comes to shove”…aka not really etherizing.

DEATHMURDERMAYHEM
This beat is sorta ominous. I think this is going to be the soundtrack the photog that will sue Mike Tyson, will be listening to on the way into the court room. Or played at the next DMX pseudo-celeb boxing match.

THE PRIZE
Damn, this album is long, but you have to give them credit as they came from the midwest, to northern cali, to socal to do the record. You def can’t accuse them of skimping.

G.I. JOSEPHINE
I love when MURS gets mad on an intro. Sorta comic booky -vs- see: 50 cent at the end of that Beanie x Jay diss record.

WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED
This is the song that should have been “Base For Your Truck”. (Cause it bumps.)

GIVE IT UP
Give it up is the track with AR actually rapping on the record, which I guess is an indicator as a future single? That’s why MURS is complaining about piracy on the track.

THE CLAP
This is the song that should have been ‘Glory “Burning” [Pee].

PAUL REUBENS
I understand Pee-Wee Hermans recently got on twitter… perhaps this was around the time that they were naming tracks with nonsensicality (yeah, I just made up that word).
