Mexico City X-Men: Wolverine premiere postponed due to Swine flu

Wolverine-x-men-origins-gambit-movie-2009-marvel Even Wolverine is afraid of the swine flu outbreak.

Twentieth Century Fox has postponed the Mexico City premiere Wednesday of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” The city has been turned into a ghost town thanks to the virus, which has killed more than 100 people.

U.S. citizens are expected to be advised not to travel to Mexico unless absolutely necessary, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We were not only concerned about Hugh’s [Jackman's] welfare – and we would never send anyone into harm’s way – but we also have an enormous office filled with people we care about,” says a Fox rep in People. “There was no point in proceeding under the current conditions.”

The Mexico government has asked for residents to stay home, shutting down schools, and Variety reports that the nation’s top movie-theater chains have shut down dozens of cinemas. (via)

Israel Turns 61 Years Old

How different Israel is 61 years on. Its population has multiplied more than ten-fold and its military power exceeds anything Ben-Gurion could rationally have dreamed of.

Sherf, whose documentation no one will bother to air out on the state’s birthday, recounted that at 4 o’clock on the fateful Friday afternoon 61 years ago “no foreign flags were lowered, our national banners weren’t hoisted, celebratory shots weren’t fired, the army didn’t march, speeches weren’t delivered.in barely 32 minutes was declared the liberty of the nation subjugated for 1887 years.”

Following Ben-Gurion’s proclamation, Hatikva was played by the orchestra in the building’s upper story (there wasn’t room below) “and as the sounds descended from above, it was as if the heavens had opened up. Everyone stood silent, motionless and listened to the wondrous hymn, emanating from an unseen place.” (via)

Gay Marriage in Iowa (Ban on Same Sex Marriage Eliminated)

Marriage requirements in Iowa remain the same, with the exception that the ban on same-sex marriage has been eliminated:

–Two people, over 18.

–Not already legally married.

–Not closely related.

Bryan English, spokesman for same-sex marriage opponents the Iowa Family Policy Center, said civilians plan to rally at county recorder offices. English said his group is offering assistance to protesters, but that the center itself is not organizing anything.

Mason City resident Dean Genth will be at the Cerro Gordo County courthouse first thing today to apply for a license to marry his partner of six years, Gary Swenson, 47. Genth, 59, will also act as one of One Iowa’s dozens of volunteers deployed across the state to observe the historic event.

Activists at county recorder offices were instructed not to engage protesters in debate, Genth said.

“We want to do our best to keep the peace,” he said. (via)

Captain Janks in Montco Jail (Howard Stern Prank Caller)

GAS STATION attendant Tom Cipriano, better known to fans of Howard Stern as Capt. Janks, spent the weekend in a jail cell.

Cipriano, 43, of North Wales, was arrested Thursday in Plymouth Township for allegedly taking a deposit of $350 from the Old Mansion House in Conshohocken to host an event there for which he never appeared, according to Plymouth Detective-Sergeant Karen Mabry. Cipriano, a prank phone caller, also is alleged to have taken a $350 deposit from the Edge Hill Tavern, in Glenside, for another appearance he skipped out on, says Cheltenham Police Lt. Joseph Gruver.

Cipriano was jailed in February for a similar scam in New Jersey and was charged in another nightclub scam in Bucks County.

As of yesterday afternoon Cipriano had not posted $2,500 bail and was locked up at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

He is accused of multiple charges that include theft by deception, and deceptive or fraudulent business practices. This week he faces three hearings. At 10 a.m. tomorrow he’s in Bucks County, at 9:25 Thursday morning he has a hearing in Plymouth Township and on Friday he wraps up the courthouse tour in Cheltenham. (via)

Oprah ‘Ah ha Moment’ fight with Mutual of Omaha

April 25, 2009 - Omaha — Mutual of Omaha is suing Oprah Winfrey over rights to the phrase “aha moment.”

The insurer said it began using the slogan “official sponsor of the aha moment” in its advertising in February. But in a letter Tuesday to Mutual of Omaha, Marc Rachman, an attorney for Winfrey’s production company, Harpo Productions Inc., demanded the insurer stop using the phrase.

Rachman said “Aha! Moment” was a signature phrase “synonymous in the public’s mind with Ms. Winfrey.”

Mutual sued the next day in federal court in Omaha seeking a declaration allowing it to use the slogan.

A spokeswoman for Harpo, Lisa Halliday, said the company hoped to reach an amicable resolution with Mutual. (via)
