Redmond O’Neal allowed to leave jail to visit sick mother Farrah Fawcett

Redmond O’Neal was allowed to leave jail for three hours over the weekend to visit his mother Farrah Fawcett, currently battling cancer, according to People. “A sergeant and a deputy drove him to his mother’s home [Saturday] and he’s now back in custody,” said L.A. County Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore. O’Neal is being held until his April 29 hearing, stemming from his most recent arrest for narcotics possession and attempting to bring narcotics into a jail. (via).

Osama bin Laden could be dead

[Pakistani President] said that neither his own advisers in Pakistan nor US intelligence agencies had detected any trace of the al-Qaeda leader since Al Jazeera television broadcast an audio recording of his voice in March.

But even then, unlike on previous occasions the authenticity of the voice purporting to be bin Laden was not confirmed by the CIA.

There have been regular reports of bin Laden’s ill health, notably speculation about his kidneys failing. Mr Zardari said his own advisers believed there was substance to the rumours.

“The question is whether he is alive or dead. There is no trace of him,” he said.

“There is no news. They obviously feel that he does not exist any more but that’s not confirmed.”

Mr Zardari’s predecessor, Pervez Musharraf, similarly suggested that the Saudi terror chief could be dead. But US officials have repeatedly stated that bin Laden could yet be hiding in the mountainous region straddling the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Mr Zardari’s comments came as he sought to reassure the international community that it need not worry over the security of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. (via)

Congress voting on Credit Card Reform

WASHINGTON, April 27 (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives is likely to vote on credit card reform legislation on Thursday, according to several sources familiar with the chamber’s agenda.

The sources, who asked to remain anonymous because the schedule has not been made public, said the timing of a vote on the pro-consumer bill was fluid and the schedule could change.

According to one source, debate on the bill — called the Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights — could start as early as Wednesday evening, followed by the introduction Thursday of amendments on behalf of the White House.

Lawmakers have seized on the public outrage against high credit card interest rates and a variety of charges and fees as well as certain billing practices of credit card companies.

The outrage was highlighted during a White House meeting last week between President Barack Obama and about a dozen credit card executives who were urged to halt what many see as unfair credit card practices and to disclose cardholder terms in language that would be easier for people to understand. You will often pay a high premium for returning a car with an empty tank, so in most cases you’ll want to fill up before you return your vehicle. However, many car rental companies, including Hertz and Avis, now offer the option of purchasing a full tank of gas when you first take the car, enabling you to return the car with as much or as little fuel as you wish.

Note that there is no refund for unused fuel, so you’ll likely be paying a little extra for the convenience of skipping the trip to the gas station.

Close Mexico Border says NY Congressman

Washington, DC – A congressional Democrat serving on the House Homeland Security Committee is calling for the “immediate and complete” closing of the Mexican border with the United States until the swine flu is contained.

“The public needs to be aware of the serious threat of swine flu, and we need to close our borders to Mexico immediately and completely until this is resolved,” Rep. Eric Massa, D-NY, said in a press release.

Despite a press conference called by the Obama administration on Sunday announcing a coordinated federal effort to deal with the illness, which has spread worldwide from Mexico, Massa said not enough is being done. (via)

Europe: no point in restricting travel due to swine flu

BRUSSELS, April 28 (Reuters) – The European Union’s health chief said on Tuesday there was no point in imposing any formal travel restrictions because of the swine flu outbreak.

“I don’t see any point of restricting travelling,” EU Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou told a news conference.

Vassiliou said on Monday she was personally in favour of avoiding non-essential travel to areas affected by swine flu. (via)
