Supreme Court Upholds FCC Crackdown on TV Dirty Words

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court ruled narrowly Tuesday in favor of a government policy that threatens broadcasters with fines over the use of even a single curse word on live television, yet stopped short of deciding whether the policy violates the Constitution.
Acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps called the decision “a big win for America’s families.” Copps said the “decision should reassure parents that their children can still be protected from indecent material on the nation’s airwaves. ”
Fox expressed disappointment with the decision, but said it is “optimistic that we will ultimately prevail when the First Amendment issues are fully aired before the courts.”
The FCC changed its long-standing policy after it concluded that a one-free-expletive rule did not make sense in the context of keeping the air waves free of indecency when children are likely to be watching television.
The precipitating events were live broadcasts of awards shows in which Bono, Cher and Nicole Richie let slip or perhaps purposely said variations of what Scalia called Tuesday “the F- and S-words.”
Under the new FCC rule, some words are so offensive that they always evoke sexual or excretory images. So-called fleeting expletives were not treated as indecent before then. (via)

Northern ice shelf (the size of New York) collapses off Antarctica

An area of an Antarctic ice shelf almost the size of New York City has broken into icebergs this month after the collapse of an ice bridge widely blamed on global warming, a scientist said today.
“The northern ice front of the Wilkins Ice Shelf has become unstable and the first icebergs have been released,” Angelika Humbert, glaciologist at the University of Muenster in Germany, said of European Space Agency satellite images of the shelf.
Humbert told Reuters about 700 sq km of ice – bigger than Singapore or Bahrain and almost the size of New York – has broken off the Wilkins this month and shattered into a mass of icebergs. (via)

John Mayer = Single

Jennifer Aniston’s former-love John Mayer has denied reports that he is dating a young actress and says he is still single.
The musician who split from Aniston recently has been the subject of claims that he is dating Scheana Marie.
In an interview with X17 Online Mayer said: “If I had a girlfriend, she would be incredibly offended by me saying, ‘I don’t have a girlfriend’ – that’s how you can be sure. I could say, ‘I’m not with anybody’ and that’d be a death wish if you were with a woman.”
He continued “If you were the woman and you stepped out and said, ‘I’m not with anybody’, you’d have to go home and take a lashing for the next three weeks! So that’s the proof.” (via)

Slash to appear on American Idol – Jumping The Shark, much?

Velvet Revolver and former Guns N’ Roses axeman Slash has been asked to mentor contestants on American Idol.
Slash (real name Saul Hudson) revealed on his Twitter that he’d been asked to help the remaining contestants out as part of “Rock Week.” No other information is available, but it likely means Slash will appear on the show next week, since this is “Rat Pack” week with the top five contestants, and the top three week usually features “judges’ choice” episodes, according to the website of the 93X FM radio station.
Hopefully Slash doesn’t use the American Idol appearance to look for a new Velvet Revolver singer, since former frontman Scott Weiland’s job is still reportedly vacant. (via)

Paula Abdul Insists To The Media She’s Never Done Drugs in Her Life – Yeah, Right.

Paula Abdul is known for her quirky, often times nonsensical comments during American Idol, which has often led media outlets to assume she was either drinking on the job, or worse.
But according to Paula, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Not only does she say she’s not drunk on live television, but goes on to say she’s never been tipsy.
Paula sat down with ABC News’ Nightline’s Cynthia McFadden for an interview that airs Thursday, and not only addresses the false accusations, but denies them.
In the piece, Cynthia asks Paula, “So let me just ask you the question straight up. Absolutely crystal clear you have not abused prescription drugs?”
She also questions Paula on alcohol, to which she responds, “Never. I’ve never been drunk in my life. I don’t like it. It’s not my thing. Spending money on clothes and shoes that’s another thing. No, no, no, no, no. Will not take those drugs. And you can check my medical records there is nothing like that. I was never on Oxycontin or Vicadin or anything like that. I was on nerve medicine and anti-inflammatories.” (via)
