R.I.P Mon Cheri DC

If I don’t see this GYRO woman poster at least once a month, a part of me dies inside.

Mon Chéri is an internationally known brand name of the Italian Ferrero company for a chocolate confectionery.

Take that classy brand name, and “DCify” it, and you’re left with a hole in the wall gyro joint in the heart of Georgetown.

However, there is nothing more horrifying for someone with active ‘post-beer-munchies’, than trudging around M Street, NW, only to be greeted in horror with what is one’s favorite gyro place being closed down.

My friend said it best in this email:

For some of you, this e-mail will probably be as empty as one of Matt’s emails. For the others, this e-mail will probably strike a personal chord of sadness: the only good thing about Georgetown, and for that matter, D.C., Mon Cheri, has closed.

Mon Cheri was much more than a late night gyro joint..for me, it was the one thing i could count on after a shitty night of Journey, Bon Jovi and T-Pain at some DC bar/club.

But, Mon Cheri also brought the worst out in some of us, like when an absolutely tanked Jon tried to parallel park his car and wound up hitting a car full of passengers behind him. Jon peeled out and being the only person nearby, i got chewed out by some fat chick with a black guy fetish.

Point is – we have stories here. Funny ones. Delicious ones. And now, it’s closed.

I share the same sentiment. Last Friday we had to hop on over to Dupont Circle for gyros, now that Mon Cheri is only in our memories. The Gyro Gods of greek mythology are not happy, folks. Sigh. I think the apocalypse starts where gyros end. Maslow’s hierarchy of need starts and ends with gyros: Physiological needs, and gyros are also the zenith of Self-actualization.
