There Will Be Blood, And Afterthoughts

My favorite movie director ever? Paul Thomas Anderson.

So, how do I know that There Will Be Blood (TWBB) (which finally I saw Saturday night/Sunday morning) was any good?

Let’s put it this way, by the time I finished watching TWBB, it was after 5AM in the morning, yet I was able to stay up through the 2.5 hours that was the duration of the movie. And lately I’ve been a notorious “faller-asleeper” in the middle of blockbuster-night movies…

It’s really hard to explain that fact too, because there was probably more ‘action’ in say –No Country For Old Men, but I fell asleep in the middle of that movie. This TWBB didn’t have as many of those type of action-packed scenes, however it was still more riveting to me. The direction and artistry in TWBB is masterful, as well. Not to be cliche, but Daniel Day Lewis IS that guy (heck, his character’s name is Daniel as well), I couldn’t see him as any other character now. TWBB was like as if Paul Thomas Anderson had tired [case-study] people watch the movie, and in any scene someone fell asleep during, he rid the movie of that scene.
As an aside, that’s how I am when I listen to The Stern Show going to bed, I’ll fall asleep in any 1-2 minute lull in the show. And based on that template and reasoning, I will say that There Will Be Blood was better than No Country For Old Men. PTA rocks, but we already knew this –ever since Mark Wahlberg’s prosthetic meat-popsicle in Boogie Nights. Oh, and yes, TWBB is out on DVD now!
