You might remember GLUE as DJ Krazyglue, but your wax remembers him as Jason Voorhees. I just remember him as part of the shabooty dynasty extended family. ShabootyDynastyCardboardCityWeatherMen! He has his hands in so many projects, that I am almost scared to ask to smell his fingers. When GLUE isn’t spinning at Shia LaBeouf’s bar mitzvah, you can find him djing on tour with Head Automatica, Yak Ballz, and with his electro-break DJ team: Sports (Glue, Daryl Palumbo, Nick Hook). The man is on the ‘come up’, and he’s ready to drop loads like Nick Manning… no, that’s not Elmers, that’s white gold! Hayyoooooo!
GLUE INTERVIEW
Shabooty: Have you officially ‘dropped’ the krazy part of your name (DJ Krazyglue), or is it like the same thing as calling Katie Cupcake, Kate Cupcake?
GLUE: I guess you could say I officially dropped it. Everyone has always called me “Glue” anyway, so its not much of a change.
So, you told me you’re at a rehearsal right now? Who’re you rehearsing
with?
Yak Ballz and Slow Suicide Stimulus. Yak’s new record drops this week on FloSpot and we have the release party in NYC this week too.
What are your upcoming gigs?
I’ll be DJing for Yak Ballz at a bunch of his record release shows the next couple months as well as Paid Dues festival in LA, and probably a tour in the coming months with him. Then there’s Sports gigs and solo DJ shows – I don’t remember dates so just check my MySpace.
When’d Daryl, Nick, and yourself get together to form Sports? And how’d
it come about?
Me and Daryl have been spinning together for a long time, but Sports really came about when we were sittin’ in our flat in London after the Head Auto tour this past summer, talkin’ about how we wanted to DJ as a team, start something fresh. Nick from Men Women & Children is our brother and the 3 of us love house, electro, ghettotech, and breaks, so that’s why we started Sports.
You have a reputation as being a nice guy –no matter who I talk
to…aka a random b*tch in Cali, or a local cat, they all say the same
thing. I guess better than being known as a douche eh?
Haha, I don’t know – is it better to be loved or feared? Most people think DJs are stuckup assholes. I don’t take what I have for granted and I love what I do, so there’s no reason for me to be a dick about it.
We know you’re in the CardboardCity WeatherMen (CCWM)
conglomerate/collective, but if you had Sophie’s choice, where you could
only affiliate yourself with one ‘axis’ of the group, which are you more a
part of?
There is only one axis. CCWM
Where’d you get the name Glue?
I always hold it down.
Where’d ya grow up? (or should I say what borough?)
Long Island, in a little town called East Rockaway. I’ve lived in every borough, but LI will always be my home. I love it here.
We know you’re into jungle, but what music influenced you growing up?
My father turned me onto rock n roll when I was very young, and from there I kept looking for heavier and heavier music. Jungle didn’t become part of my life til ’95. I’m pretty obsessed with death metal, that’s kinda all I listened to til I was like 13 and 14 are started going to clubs.
How’d ya get involved with the [def]“Jukies”/Y@k Ballz/WeatherMen?
I’ve always been into their music, but became friends with them about 3 years ago when Daryl rounded up all the troops for CC. Cage asked me to DJ for him when he dropped Hells Winter in 2005, and I’ve had some of the best times of my life with all those guys ever since.
Same question…with Daryl?
I met him when we were both like 13 years old, at one of the first GlassJaw shows – I went to school with his guitar player. Daryl is one of my best friends.
How is doing a SportsCC show different than say doing a show with Cage?
Its totally different. For one thing, people are dancing. We’re a DJ squad – its about workin the crowd up into a frenzy, all hours of the night, losing our minds in front of you. When I was performing with Cage I was playing in the background, but still tried to bring that same energy to the show.
Can you give me insight on how close-knit the CCWM family is? Or is it
mainly just everyone trying to do their own thing and then get together
when it comes to shows and events?
Everyone is very close. Its not just a business relationship if that’s what you’re getting at. Its about blurring the lines and doing what we want.
Pick your favorite director out of the following: Terry Gilliam, Paul
Thomas Anderson, Darron Aronofsky, Stanley Kubrick
Herschell Gordon Lewis
You ever dabble in listenin’ to Howard Stern?
I used to a lot, before he moved to satellite. I almost ran my car off the road a few times on the way to work listening to that maniac.
As far as spinning what is your fav. genre to spin?
If you asked me a few years ago I would have said drum n bass. Lately I’m feelin breaks, house, and electro a lot more than usual. Its all about that buzzsaw.
What projects are you working on currently?
I finally finished a 10 year mix to celebrate my career as a DJ. Its all my favorite jungle records from 96-98, should be out in a couple of months. Sports is working on its second DJ mix. I’m also working on some solo stuff under the alias Camp Blood. Its soundscape shit – like watching an 80′s slasher flick on LSD.
What are you doing as far as a Superbowl party? Go Giants?
I hate Sports. I watch the SuperBowl for the commercial breaks because I’m obsessed with media and advertising, I could honestly care less who carries the hogskin over the white line.
A Hypothetical: Okay if you were there studying for an exam, could you
concentrate with D&B bumping?
Absolutely not. I need dead silence in order to study. I have a terrible memory, and in order to remember things I need to be totally focused.
Especially if I’m reading.
F, Marry, Kill -(F one, Marry one, Kill one)-
Katie Cupcake, Michelle Williams, Gisele Bundchen
Haha, what’s up with you and Katie Cupcake? This is the second time you’ve asked about her in this interview, you got a crush on her?
Katie’s cool though, I definitely wouldn’t kill her.
[editor's note: yes, there's something way hot about being the IMHO, Godmother of Alt.pr0n/Suicide Girls/God Girls fame... in other words, the "original" SG]
Is there ever a weird dynamic where say you’re dj’ing a show and you’re ready to play more joints for an encore, but the performer is done?
I’m always ready to play more joints. I hate having to walk off stage.
What’s Daryl [Palumbo] like behind closed doors?
Behind closed doors Daryl is a 400 pound man, or at least he can eat
like one.
5 years ago could you have pictured how things are coming together for
ya’ll today?
I never really think about where I’m going to be in 5 years – I think that leaves too much room for disappointment. I definitely live in the moment and do what feels right. I’m glad things have turned out the way they did, I wouldn’t take anything back that happened over the last 5 years.
If you were getting a decent check, would you be willing to DJ for Hanna Montana?
Not a chance. She sounds like a cartoon character. I try to keep my DJing duties to artists I like and enjoy being on stage with, or in a bus or van with. If I was doing it for a check I would have quit years ago.
Shia LaBeouf’s going to be dating her in 3-4 years, right?
Haha, no way. Shia is in the big leagues. You can’t play in a movie with Megan Fox and then date Hanna Barbera.
In CardboardCityWeathermMen (CCWM), who would you say is the funniest cat?
Its tough to say, they all make me laugh. Sometimes they don’t even have to do anything – I can just look at someone in the squad and laugh, because I have hysterical memories with them. Palumbo definitely has the ability to make me lose my shit though.
I ask everyone this, but what’s your ‘post-show’ ritual?
I usually cut my arm open and pour blood into a chalice and make Nick Hook drink it.
If I recall your email sig, are you doing a clothing line, too?
Die Pig Die Clothing is my boy out in Texas. He’s young and very talented, I met him on the Hell’s Winter Tour. I love his work so I rep it.
Do all of the CCWM rock sidekicks? Sidekick II? III?
We’ve all had them at one point, most of us had every generation.
Apparently the iPhone is where its at right now, but I’m rockin a Sidekick ID and it is the worst phone I’ve ever had. I want the Voyager.
Which tour that you’ve done had the most broads? H.A.?
Every tour I’ve done has had broads. Girls love music, it makes them wanna shake their ass.
Is D.C. missing out on the ill tours? (i.e. paid dues/rock the
bells/etc?)
Nah, DC has always been dope when I’ve been down there. Its not about getting the big tours – its about the vibe of a room. I’ve played drum n bass in DC with my boys from Headhunterz Inc in a room with 100 people and had just as much fun as a huge show.
I peeped your blog –everyone check it!
Yeah, you can hit me there, or on MySpace at www.myspace.com/djkrazyglue.
Thanks for chattin’ with me, see you soon.
Cheers,
Shabooty
